Open-air prayers near Cala Llonga

It is undoubtedly one of the island’s most unique places of worship, having been designed as an open-air chapel. Situated in a wooded area of the tourist resort of Cala Llonga, it was built to enable religious services to be held during the summer months.

The Chapel of the Assumption was designed in 1972 by the architects Elías Torres and José Antonio Martínez Lapeña, who made use of existing features on the site, such as a cistern and two stone terraces, to create a cosy, semi-enclosed space with white walls, roofed by the canopy of the surrounding pine trees.

A tip: if you visit on 15 August, the Feast of the Assumption of Mary, you’ll see it at its finest.
