Everything You Should Know About the Ball Pagès of Ibiza

Declared Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2012, this traditional dance combines music, movement, and attire in a ritual that has been passed down from generation to generation.
Born in the island’s villages, it remains alive today thanks to the colles (folk groups) that perform it during patron saint festivals, celebrations, and cultural events, keeping the purest essence of Ibicenco identity alive.
Modalities of the Ball Pagès

The ball pagès is made up of several modalities, each with its own rhythm and character.
- “La curta” is the slowest, traditionally used to begin and end the festivities.
- “La llarga”, on the other hand, is much more energetic: the male dancer jumps, spins with strength, and marks the beat with the castanyoles, while the female dancer maintains an elegant and distant posture. There are various versions of this dance.
- Finally, “ses nou rodades” (or ses dotze), with strong ritual significance, symbolically represents pregnancy or the annual cycle (depending on whether there are 9 or 12 turns). It is performed with circular figures and minimal physical contact between the dancers.
The man improvises within the figures traced by the woman, who with short, spiral steps sets the rhythm.
In almost every dance, the start is decided with a gesture or a strike of the castanyola. The music is played with three instruments: the large and resonant castanyoles, the drum, and the three-holed flaüta.
Costumes and Jewelry: The Importance of the Emprendada

The ball pagès cannot be understood without its traditional attire, authentic symbols of Ibicenco identity. Women have three main outfits: the festive dress, the bridal dress, and the work attire, each with its own meaning.
The oldest is the gonella negra, made up of skirt, wool bodice, embroidered apron, silk shawl, and straw hat. It is worn with the silver and red coral emprendada, exclusive to this dress, composed of necklaces, brooches, and reliquaries of great patrimonial value.
The festive dress, in white, stands out for its many petticoats, embroidered bodice with silver or gold buttons, apron, and lace headscarf. It is completed with a colorful silk shawl and the gold emprendada, which originally represented the family dowry. On these occasions, women also wear traditional Ibicenco rings, sometimes up to 24, as a symbol of commitment.
The colored dress is a more modern and cheerful variation, with infinite fabric combinations, also worn with the gold emprendada.
Men wore white trousers and shirts, a black waistcoat with silver buttons, a red or black sash, and a beret or straw hat, finishing the look with esparto espadrilles.
These outfits, together with the emprendada, bring color and solemnity to the ball pagès, keeping Ibiza’s cultural essence alive.
Where to See the Ball Pagès in the island of Ibiza

The ball pagès continues to play an active role in the island’s festive calendar.
At almost every patron saint festival—from Sant Antoni in January to Santa Gertrudis in November—the colles perform, turning village squares into stages filled with music and tradition. Towns like Sant Miquel, Santa Eulària, Sant Josep, Ibiza Town, or Sant Rafel are key places to enjoy it in its most authentic setting.
In addition, during summer, weekly performances are organized in church courtyards or village squares, aimed at both residents and visitors wanting to experience local culture.
Watching the ball pagès live is not just witnessing a show: it is connecting with centuries of history, respect for tradition, and pride in Ibicenco identity.
