Sustainability, protagonist of the 22nd edition of the Day of the Canoe, to be held this Saturday

Es Nàutic has created a protocol with environmental rules and recommendations. The deadline for registration begins tomorrow

Sant Antoni, 27th August 2023. Tomorrow begins the registration period to participate in the 22nd edition of the Canoe Day, which will take place next Saturday, 2 September, organised by the Club Nàutic Sant Antoni, as part of the Sant Bartomeu festivities. A new feature of this year's edition is the leading role that sustainability will play in the course of the day, as the CNSA Sports Department has developed a protocol with environmental rules and recommendations, so that this activity does not generate any footprint on the environment.

The Canoe Day is considered an ecological, sustainable and environmentally committed activity, which takes place in a fragile area such as the Bay of Portmany. For this reason, the organisation will provide water to all participants, but the containers must be brought from home. In this sense, the use of plastic is not allowed in the facilities and participants are advised to bring reusable containers or canteens. At the end of the run, refreshments will be available and will also be served in reusable cups.

Smoking is also not allowed in the facilities and it is requested that water is used correctly in showers and changing rooms. The CNSA is also reducing the use of paper as much as possible, so registration, information and management of the event will only be done online. More information can be found at this link. The deadline for registration is 31 August.

The route, as usual, will start at the CNSA facilities, heading for the Racó del Salt d'en Portes, next to the Aquarium of es Cap Blanc, and then return to Es Nàutic. The activity is aimed at young people aged 12 and over and adults, although those aged between 12 and 16 must be accompanied. The activity lasts 3 or 4 hours and starts from 9 am to 9.30 am, with registration and access control at the CNSA facilities. The boarding of the canoes will take place between 9.30am and 10am, and the sporting route will take place between 10.30am and 1pm, approximately. At 13.30, already at the CNSA Sports Area facilities, there will be a raffle with dozens of gifts for all participants, including a sea kayak.

It is also recommended to bring the appropriate equipment (swimming costume, lycra or T-shirt, shorts, rubber or neoprene shoes or boots, sun protection and a cap), as well as spare clothes, towel, water and lunch.

In the year 2000, Pepín Valdés and Neus Mateu, delegate and technician, respectively, of the Canoeing section of the Club Nàutic Sant Antoni, proposed organising the 1st edition of the Canoeing Day, which started from Caló des Moro in the direction of Cala Salada, with a total of 60 participants. The event was very well received and had a popular character that, to this day, is still maintained. Few things have had to be modified since that first experience, apart from the starting and finishing points and an alternative route. The format remains the same with the same rules. In 2019 and 2020, due to the works at Es Nàutic and the covid-19 pandemic, there was no choice but to take a break. But, with the return to a certain degree of normality, in 2021, the 20th edition was resumed and in subsequent years it has continued.
