Blue Life Proyect

| Fomento | News

This new project aims to help maintain the Posidonia plant, a marine plant of great importance due to the large number of species that live in it, as well as being one of the reasons why the waters of the Mediterranean have their characteristic turquoise colour. Ibiza Sostenible is responsible for this new project called "Blue Life", they will be in charge of restoring posidonia meadows and coral beds in the Mediterranean Sea between 2023 and 2028. They have several partners such as Forever Green, the Consell de Ibiza, scientists from IMEDEA and the football club Real Betis Balonpié.

The presentation of this project began with the collection of the posidonia fruit, because inside the fruit is the seed of the plant, although it can also be replanted through cuttings of the plant. But as was said in the presentation, the means available to them are more than imitated, so it is not enough to replant, it is necessary to raise awareness about its conservation and protection for the project to be successful. The Posidonia flowers every 10 to 15 years and the plant grows at a rate of 1 cm per year, so it takes a long time to achieve a mature plant.

The head of the project and founder of Ibiza Sostenible, Oscar Caro, stresses that "the aim of this project, which has been three years in the making, is to change the tourism model and encourage citizen collaboration for the protection and recovery of the posidonia meadows and coral beds". Later in the afternoon, the presentation of the project continued on the Paseo de Figueretas with the Forum on Regenerative Culture, Tourism and Sustainability, in which various volunteers took part.
